John Barrowman cast in US drama ‘Arrow’

Inside TV are reporting that John Barrowman has secured a recurring role in the CW network’s new and upcoming action-drama Arrow.

The US show is based on the graphic novel Green Arrow by DC Comics and stars Stephen Amell in the eponymous lead role.

Barrowman, who made his household name through his role as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood, has signed up for the regular role in the show’s first season. his role is currently unknown, though producers have teased that he plays…

 “a well-dressed man, who is as mysterious as he is wealthy … he is an acquaintance of the Queen family and a prominent figure in Starling City.”

It has been speculated upon by fans that Barrowman’s role may in fact be the part of the comic’s philanthropist “Stanley Dover Senior”, or possibly a twist on “Brick” or “Green Lantern”.

FACT No.10: Multiple Jacks

If the events of Torchwood and Doctor Who are considered together, there are four different versions of Captain Jack Harkness in the World War II time period. Here they are in chronological order of his own timeline…

JACK #1 is his appearance in Doctor Who ‘The Empty Child’/‘The Doctor Dances’; his significant first encounter with the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler. The night that changed his life!

JACK #2 appeared via Vortex Manipulator in 1869 London (part-seen in Torchwood ‘Fragments’), following the events of ‘The Parting of the Ways’. The device short-circuited and the teleportation was left unusable, which meant he lived through World War II once again, part of which we glimpsed in flashbacks featured in Torchwood: Children of Earth.

JACK #3 is the Jack seen in the Torchwood episode ‘Captain Jack Harkness’ in Series 1 in which he is sent back in time to this period with Toshiko.

JACK #4, however, is significantly less mobile as this time round he was buried alive in 27 AD (Torchwood ‘Exit Wounds’), only to be dug up in 1901 by Torchwood and put in a cryo-chamber with instructions to be defrosted/woken in 2009. Therefore, this fourth WW2 Jack was frozen throughout the time period that all the others were wandering around.

Barrowman lands lead role in US Pilot

Following the recent news that Freema Agyeman will star in a US pilot of a Sex And The City prequel, it has now been announced that John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness of Doctor Who and Torchwood) has been cast in the lead role of a new US drama pilot.

Barrowman will fill the role of Julius Ashford Lily in the ABC pilot Gilded Lilys, a new period-set drama. His character is “the charming son of the central family in the show, which tells the story of the opening of the first ever luxury hotel in New York City.”

The creator of Gilded Lilys, Shonda Rhimes (best known as the creator of Grey’s Anatomy), who will also act as executive producer alongside her Shondaland partner Betsy Beers, while one of the contributing writers is believed to be KJ Steinberg (writer of US show Gossip Girl).

Other actors confirmed to be co-starring alongside John Barrowman in the ABC pilot include: Blythe Danner (Paul, Meets the Parents, Nurse Jackie) and Sarah Bolger (The Tudors, The Spiderwick Chronicles), as well as Brian O’Byrne, Matt Lauria, Matt Long, Brigid Brannagh, Maury Sterling and Madeline Zima.

Gilded Lilys begins filming soon and will broadcast later this year.

‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’ Episode 1 Script

The BBC Writers Room mini-site asked their followers on Twitter, recently, what television script they would most like to read. By an overwhelming majority, Torchwood: Miracle Day won out and so the script for the first episode of the fourth series – entitled ‘The New World’, written and supplied by Russell T Davies – has been added to the Writers Room’s long list of television scripts (among which are also Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures episodes).

John Barrowman talks to Entertainment Wise

Online entertainment news website Entertainment Wise has conducted an exclusive interview with everyone’s favourite omnisexual, immortal Time-Agent-playing actor and singer John Barrowman about what he’s currently up to tour and singing-wise as well as touching on a possible fifth series of Torchwood…

Q: And looking ahead to future series’ is there anything in particular that you’d like to see Jack do? Any adventures you’d like to see him get taken on?
“I don’t know if I’m making an assumption because we don’t know if there is going to be another series yet, so were still waiting to see. But I’m happy with what the writers write. I like the aspect of that particular job - I’m not a producer, I’m not a writer, I come in and I get the scripts and I do the job, and I bring the character to life and that kind of brings a bit of the pressure off! But I think I’d love to see Jack time travel a little more, and I love going back in time to Jack’s past. I think that’s also nice to explore.”

Q: Jack’s a great character, what do you like most about playing him?
“The fact that he’s a hero and he’s a different kind of hero. He’s not a typical type of hero that you would see in a comic book or in a TV show, and that’s what I love about him. That’s what makes him fun to play. Also he’s a little bit naughty and he speaks his mind, and he’s got conviction with everything he does.”

Starz: Torchwood may not return in 2012

The CEO at Starz, Chris Albrecht, has said that despite any form of success of Torchwood: Miracle Day, the show may not actually be certain to return next year, regardless of immense popularity. He emphasised – at the TV critics tour event - that much of Torchwood’s future i dependant on writer and showrunner Russell T Davies and whether he can come up with a story for the show that Starz deem good enough.

He said: “Torchwood is not one of the show we went into thinking about a yearly return. It’s about Russell T Davies … he has a lot of things on his plate. If Torchwood is at the top of his list, that will effect the future of Torchwood.”

Let’s hope Mr Albrecht sees sense very soon!

     But Jack’s seen these creatures deadly effect before, and a distant memory of a train ride in World War II Lahore proves to be vital in solving the puzzle, while the team find a trail of red petals and destruction to follow...

FULL Torchwood Comic Con 2011 Panel

Torchwood: Miracle Day – Ten Teasers

Online television news and spoiler source Digital Spy have released their own set of ten tantalising teasers for the upcoming series of Torchwood: Miracle Day in this run-up period to its premiere on American cable network Starz six days before the UK’s BBC One broadcast.

1. There's a cheeky reference to a deceased former Torchwood member (and no, it's not Ianto).
2. The chief villains from Torchwood: Children of Earth also get a mention, in a roundabout sort of way.
3. "The Founding Fathers had me in mind when they wrote the Constitution, don't you think?"
4. At one point, Rex makes a less than graceful escape.
5. "She should have run faster."
6. A certain drug familiar to Torchwood fans is utilised once again.
7. "First sign of trouble, you go running off with Captain Jack B*llocks."
8. Wales is the British equivalent of New Jersey.
9. "I've got to *** for this ******?!"

Torchwood: Miracle Day – ‘The New World’ Synopsis

The BBC Press Office have now released the full official synopsis for the Torchwood: Miracle Day exciting opening episode, ‘The New World’, given the name of the working title for the whole series before they came up with “Miracle Day” as a name.

One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep ageing – they get hurt and sick, but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.


With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month's time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as CIA agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking: "What is Torchwood?", he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human ... for ever.


In the launch episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, Agent Rex Matheson is impaled in a car crash and miraculously survives, while his analyst, Esther Drummond, sets out to discover what Torchwood is. Far away, in Wales, Gwen Cooper lives in hiding with her husband Rhys and daughter Anwen – she’s the last surviving Torchwood member and is determined to stay hidden.
