The Future of Torchwood

Russell T Davies has spoken to the official Torchwood Magazine about the plans for Torchwood's future. Davies said he would have no difficultly continuing the story of Torchwood from the ending of 'Children of Earth'.

"I could write you scene one of series four right now. I know exactly how to pick it up. I've got a shape in mind, and I've got stories. I know where you'd find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you'd go forward with a new form of Torchwood."

He added: "If the BBC asked for another 13 one-part stories, that's what we'd do. I'm ready for anything, but I think it works well as one continuous story. But if the BBC decide they want 13 one-offs, I'll suddenly decide that's the best format in the world!"

Newsround 'Waters of Mars' Review

Newsround - CBBC's children's news programme - have added their review of 'The Waters of Mars' to their website and you can read it in full below, but be warned it does contain some spoilers for the story!

The story
The latest Doctor Who adventure sees David Tennant arrive on a human colony in Mars 50 years in the future. At first the colonists see the Doctor as a threat but they soon need his help when an alien virus starts to transform the crew into monsters.
Fierce battle:
The bug is coming from the water and threatens to wipe out the colony and the Doctor is their only hope. But will he come to the rescue and change the course of history? The crew of the colony are world famous and the Doctor reckons it is really important that he does not change what happens in the year 2059.
He knows he shouldn't take the law of time into his own hands this time round but when he sees the humans on the colony fighting to survive he just can't help but get involved. But can he handle the consequences? The Waters of Mars shows the Doctor battling with his own thoughts and his fear that his role as the Time Lord might have gone too far? Has the time come for the Doctor retire from the Tardis? You will have to tune in on 15 November to find out.

The characters
The familiar character of the Doctor changes a little in this episode. He seems troubled by his conscience and really wants to walk away from the monsters on Mars. Of course you can expect the usual funny bits when the Doctor baffles other characters with his razor sharp wit.
The other main character is Captain Adelaide who is in charge of the colony on Mars. She seems pretty scary at first and the kind of person you wouldn't want to disagree with but she does show a softer side later in the programme. Other characters include the rest of the crew and of course the creatures created by the Waters of Mars.

Highlights
One of the best and most scary bits is when you first see the transformation of the first crew member to be infected with the water virus. You will be on the edge of your seat and be prepared for a bit of a fright. Another highlight is when the Doctor turbocharges a robot to hitch a ride and escape the monsters. And it's the same robot which saves the day, having been sent to start up the Tardis by the Doctor.

Any weak bits?
The weakest bit was the fact that we are not told what the Doctor is doing on Mars. He just seems to appear there at the start of the episode. The only other weak part were the monsters costumes. They could have been a little scarier.

Hit or miss?
Definitely a HIT. This is a classic Doctor Who episode and one you won't want to miss.
This episode is one of the darkest yet and full of moments that will have you hiding behind the sofa. It is action packed and has a twist in the tale you really won't see coming.
All that AND it's the second last time you will see David Tennant as the Time Lord.

Newsround have given 'The Waters of Mars' a 4 out of 5.

'The Waters Of Mars' Air Date - UK and US

The official broadcast dates of 'The Waters of Mars' for the UK and the US have been confirmed. The UK broadcast has been confirmed as November 15th 2009 on BBC One at 7:00PM - the date rumoured among fans for a while previous to the confirmation - and will also be aired in America on December 19th on BBC America.

'The Waters Of Mars' guest-stars include Lindsay Duncan as Adelaide (the woman in charge of Bowie Base One), Peter O'Brian as Ed (Adelaide's second-in-command) and Chook Sibtain (who previously appeared as Mr Grantham in SJA 'Warriors of the Kudlak') as Tarak Ital.

David Tennant has said of 'The Waters Of Mars': "It tells a different sort of story, I think, and it's a long time into the episode before The Doctor takes control. That's what's unnerving about it - it's not the standard structure. We expect The Doctor to take control earlier - we expect The Doctor to know how he's going to do it and how he's going to win through and he doesn't. Even though he wins in the end it's a bitter sweet victory. People die. That's part of the story we have to tell to go where we're going."

Lindsay plays Adelaide – the Doctor's cleverest and most strong-minded companion. She and the Doctor face terror on the Red Planet in one of the scariest adventures yet.

Torchwood Series 4

John Barrowman stood in for Elaine Paige, hosting the show while presenting listeners with a bucket-load of musical show tunes (and even played Song Of Freedom from the Doctor Who Series 4 Soundtrack). In the last few minutes John read out some texts and emails, one asking when and whether Torchwood would be returning.

John replied with, along the lines of: "We're in negotiations and hopefully Torchwood will return early in the new year!"

Considering a lot of fans were ruling out any return for Torchwood, this is great news!

Barry Letts (1925-2009)

It is with deepest sorrow that I inform you of the recent passing of Barry Letts, the producer of Doctor Who from 1969 to1974. He had been suffering from cancer for some time prior to his death and this is believed to be the cause.

Barry was such a brilliant driving force and legend behind Doctor Who and certainly seemed to me in commentaries and interviews like such a kind man. My sympathies go out to Barry's family and friends.

Series 5 Logo!

The brand new Doctor Who logo for Series 5 has been revealed...

Steven Moffat, the new Head Writer and Executive Producer (and the genius behind 'The Empty Child', 'The Girl in the Fireplace', 'Blink' and 'Silence in the Library'), says, "A new logo. The 11th logo for the 11th Doctor – those grand old words, Doctor Who, suddenly looking newer than ever. And, look at that, something really new – an insignia! DW in TARDIS form! Simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle. I apologise to school notebooks everywhere, because in 2010 that's what they're going to be wearing."

I myself think the TARDIS-shaped "DW" insignia of the logo is really very good, but for me the actual words part, "Doctor Who", is a bit of a disappointment. Although I really hope I take to it soon. I don't enjoy disliking parts of Doctor Who.

New Who Logo!

With so many changes going on for Doctor Who Series 5 we've got quite a lot to get used to and now there's something else as well. The official BBC Doctor Who website have announced that tomorrow, October 6th, a brand new Doctor Who logo for Series 5 will be revealed!

There have been 9 official Doctor Who logos up to the current one, the most famous of the classic series being the diamond logo which lasted many, many years and bridged the change from Jon Pertwee's to Tom Baker's Doctors; it made its debut appearance in the opening of Sarah Jane Smith's first story 'The Time Warrior'.
