PostBanner_FAN-ART
It been quite a while since my previous (and first) Fan Art post, so I thought it was time I post another! This piece of artwork is entirely by me and is called “The Ponds”.

“The Legs” and “The Nose”!
...as The Doctor called Amy and Rory Pond in Impossible Astronaut.

Here they're in their costumes for Series 6 Episode 9 (rumoured to be called "What Are Little Boys Made Of?")

‘My Mysterious Doctor’ Poster

articleimage_470
Following the posters released last year, such as the Crack In Time poster and the The Pandorica Opens poster of Van Gogh’s TARDIS exploding painting, the BBC have now given the official nod for a release of the painting shown during the opening minutes of ‘The Impossible Astronaut’, last Saturday, of a painting of the Eleventh Doctor in a Poseidon-like pose.

A Revealing Look at Our Favourite Time Lord

Ladies and gentlemen, please don't avert your eyes! Because if you do, you might miss out on this very special tongue-in-cheek art print that appeared as a canvas painting in Doctor Who, Series 6: "The Impossible Astronaut."

QMX is thrilled to bring you a faithful re-creation of the painting titled, "My Mysterious Doctor." It's an unabashed look at Matt Smith as Doctor Who, clutching a trident, with cherubs circling overhead and a scarlet red drape positioned ever so appropriately.

The unfinished painting was supposedly created by a nobleman's daughter, Matilda, and appeared onscreen for a few fleeting moments. Our art print is taken directly from the original painting and has been resized to 18" w x 24" h on 100-pound satin-finish paper.

Positively scandalous!* And just $14.95.

The 18-inch wide 24-inch tall poster entitled ‘My Mysterious Doctor’ is currently listed as having an RRP of $14.95 - we are yet to discover the UK retail price – and is available to order now!

Support Elisabeth Sladen Stamp Tribute Campaign

articleimage_469
A Facebook group has been recently set up as a campaign to get Elisabeth Sladen, called Elisabeth Sladen - Commemorative First Day Stamp Cover Tribute, put on a Royal Mail stamp as a commemorative tribute to the wonderful woman who filled the brilliant role of Sarah Jane Smith for over 30 years. Here is the information the founder of the group has given…

ElisabethSladen 01We have a group on Facebook, which we're desperately trying to get support for. We're trying to push forward the idea of the Stamp Centre in London, to do a commemorative First Day Stamp Cover as a tribute to Elisabeth Sladen in recognition of her many contributions to the world of Doctor Who.

I emailed the Stamp Centre prior to creating the Facebook group, and I finally heard back from them today. This was their response.

"Thanks for suggestion we were thinking of doing something for Nick but maybe we will do something for both of them. Steven [Moffat?] will talk to Tom Baker about doing a tribute cover."

I feel if we can get enough support for this group, we can forward the link to the Stamp Centre and cement the idea.

So it is actually a possibility, and actually more than just a possibility!

In memory of Elisabeth Sladen

As I’m sure you all know by now, but it is with deep regret that inform you of the passing of Elisabeth Sladen.

Elisabeth was, to put it quite simply, a Doctor Who legend. She was a kind, generous, warm-hearted lady who stole the scene every time she walked into frame. I was – as I know many, if not all, of you were – utterly shocked and saddened by the news of her death last night. Again, as with Lis’s good friends Barry Letts (prolific Doctor Who producer 1969-74) and Nicholas Courtney (The Brigadier), it was cancer that did it. Apparently she had been ill for quite some time.

My apologies for the long delay of this post, but I had no idea how I could possibly write something that would do this wonderful lady enough justice. I cannot express the tremendous feeling of disbelief and shock that I felt when I heard the news of Elisabeth’s death - I expect many of you experienced something very similar.

Though I have known Doctor Who well my whole life, I am somebody who came to the show properly in 2003, after the announcement of the show’s imminent return and during the surge of classic series story repeats. I was first introduced to the character of Sarah Jane Smith in a repeat of the story ‘Pyramids Of Mars’ on UK Gold, which for me could not have been a better introduction to Miss Smith. I distinctly remember being struck during that story by how original Sarah Jane was as a companion to what I had seen before and by this actress’s brilliant performance and portrayal.

As a discovered a few years later, this was the performance of Elisabeth Sladen who, if I hadn’t taken to her instantly before, had stolen my heart as Sarah Jane once more in ‘School Reunion’ in 2006 – despite all the years off-screen, Elisabeth proved she hadn’t lost any of her talent for acting. So I was delighted when The Sarah Jane Adventures came along and turned out to be real TV gold, giving another generation the chance to fall in love with her and Sarah Jane Smith once more, and she did just that. Her energy and vibrant radiance never faltered, as with her performances.

All my sympathies go out to Elisabeth’s family and friends. She will be sadly missed by them and her many fans, and will definitely be remembered with great, great fondness. Goodbye Elisabeth Sladen, you will never be forgotten.

John Simm to Return?

articleimage_464
One of Doctor Who’s trio of executive producers and its head writer Steven Moffat has teased that John Simm may reprise his role in the show as the sixth incarnation of The Master, having previously appeared in Series 3’s three-parter finale and the 2009 specials finale and swansong of the Tenth Doctor ‘The End Of Time’.

At the screening of the opening two-parter story of Series 6 in New York recently, Moffat said:
"After [Simm’s last appearance] he'd been saying, 'I think now that David [Tennant]'s left as the Doctor, I would have to leave the Master'. But he pulled me aside and said, 'I didn't mean that! Look at me, I'm fit, I'm okay!'"

Moffat also laughed off the rife rumours that Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ Sherlock, would be cast as The Master, saying, “Benedict has to wait probably.”

So, would you want John Simm’s Master back?

John Barrowman & Bill Pullman at Cannes

articleimage_456
In a promotional press junket, John Barrowman (Captain Jack!!) and Bill Pullman (Oswald Danes and star of Independence Day) have gone to Managers in Partnership Television Media Market (MIPTV) to promote July’s fourth series of Torchwood, ‘Miracle Day’.

They spoke to Richard Arnold about working with each other, what they love about ‘Miracle Day’, and Johnny B also talks about the growth of Torchwood from Series One way back in 2006 to Series Four and the massive changes Torchwood has undergone every series…

John Barrowman and Bill Pullman on Torchwood: Miracle Day

John Barrowman explained the approach to the new series of Torchwood even further during an interview with Deadline: There is so much more we can do with Torchwood now having made the leap to America. It’s going to be even bigger and better. And, for me on a personal level, the move to America has been amazing. The audience is going to need a forklift truck to pick their jaws off the ground. The stunt work is unbelievable. I used to do quite a lot of stunts except if it was jumping off of buildings but now I’m not allowed to because of the insurance policy. I’m much more valuable in America!”

Julie Gardner – executive producer for Torchwood since the first series – also gave her comments on the show and on the new global feeling to it in the new series: “We're taking the Welsh global - retaining the best of British drama while learning all about US production values. Previously, America was represented in our stories by two people in US military uniform. Now we can tell a truly global story with actors of the calibre of Bill Pullman.”
Speaking to Worldscreen, Julie also said: “It helps us reach some scale. We've had for the first time the opportunity to shoot both in the U.K. and also in America. We are doing bigger stunts. We are able to create more action. We have more background artists. So there is an onscreen value. The single most important thing to say is, at heart, the show remains the same. We haven't been asked to change it. We haven't been asked to be 'American', whatever that means. Both Starz and BBC One have asked us to make the best quality, most bold offering of Miracle Day that we possibly could.”

An article about the show’s much-anticipated return also shed some light on the issue of the updates and alterations to John Barrowman’s costume as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood: Miracle Day: “Among the tweaks on the show, Captain Jack’s iconic RAF coat has been “re-booted” with a lighter weight material and a “slimmer cut.” According to Barrowman, the former was to account for LA’s hotter weather, while the latter was the decision of the designer (Shawna Trpcic), not him.”

Steven Moffat Talks Series 6

The official BBC Doctor Who site (yep, them again!) have updated their news feed with an exclusive interview with the man himself: the Showrunner, Executive Producer and Head Writer (and general all round genius) of Doctor WhoSteven ‘The Moff’ Moffat!

How has this series evolved from last year?

Well we've moved through the funfair a bit - we've done the rollercoaster, now we're on the ghost train. Last year, in a way, was all about saying, don't worry, it's still him, it's still the same show, nothing's really been lost. Losing a leading man like David Tennant is seismic - unless you gain a leading man like Matt Smith. It's been the biggest joy to see him stride in and just claim that TARDIS for his own. But now he's really here, and the part is his, and the bow tie is cool, he's ready to lead us places we didn't know existed. Last year we reassured you - this year, to hell with that, we're going to worry the hell out of you. How well do we really know that man, or what he's capable of? We're putting the Who? back in the Doctor.

Is there a major story arc to look out for?

Oh, there's a big story being told this year, and major mysteries from the very off. As ever, in this show, the stories all stand alone, and every episode is a perfect jumping-on point for a new viewer. But at the same time the over-arching plot will be a bigger player this year. More than hints and whispers - we're barely ten minutes into episode one before our heroes face a dilemma that they'll be staring at months from now. And there will be no easy answers.

Will there be new monsters?

They're ... scary. Very scary. And, ohh, I don't want to say more - there's the Silence in 1 & 2, the Siren, in episode 3, the Gangers in 5 & 6, all these are more than just freaky costumes and masks; there are SCARY ideas here. And just wait till you meet Idris in episode 4.

Is this series scarier than the last one?

See above. Yes, I think so. But it's not JUST scary - it's funny and moving and revelling in its own insanity too.

How have the characters evolved?

The big difference, I suppose, is how long the Doctor is hanging around in the lives of his Companions. His normal MO is get them while they're young, and leave them while they're young too. He's careful to put them back where he found them, before he screws up their lives. But here he is, married couple on board - and much as he loves them both, he does wonder if it isn't time he got out of the way. Before something really BAD happens.

What can you tell us about the cliff-hanger at the end of episode 7?

Normally our cliff-hangers are lives being threatened. With this one, three live are changed FOREVER.
