'Waters Of Mars' Summary

The BBC Press Office has - along with many other upcoming shows - released a summary of the next 2009 special 'The Waters of Mars', it is as follows...

Mars, 2059. Bowie Base One. Last recorded message: "Don't drink the water. Don't even touch it. Not one drop."

Starring David Tennant as The Doctor and guest starring acclaimed British stage and screen actress Lindsay Duncan, The Waters Of Mars is the second Doctor Who special to be screened this year. Lindsay plays Adelaide – the Doctor's cleverest and most strong-minded companion. She and the Doctor face terror on the Red Planet in one of the scariest adventures yet.

Neighbours, Flying Doctors and Casualty star Peter O'Brien also guest stars as Ed, Adelaide's second-in-command at the base. The Waters Of Mars is written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford and is directed by Graeme Harper.

Torchwood Series 4

John Barrowman stood in for Elaine Paige, hosting the show while presenting listeners with a bucket-load of musical show tunes (and even played Song Of Freedom from the Doctor Who Series 4 Soundtrack). In the last few minutes John read out some texts and emails, one asking when and whether Torchwood would be returning.

John replied with, along the lines of: "We're in negotiations and hopefully Torchwood will return early in the new year!"

Considering a lot of fans were ruling out any return for Torchwood, this is great news!

Barry Letts (1925-2009)

It is with deepest sorrow that I inform you of the recent passing of Barry Letts, the producer of Doctor Who from 1969 to1974. He had been suffering from cancer for some time prior to his death and this is believed to be the cause.

Barry was such a brilliant driving force and legend behind Doctor Who and certainly seemed to me in commentaries and interviews like such a kind man. My sympathies go out to Barry's family and friends.

Series 5 Logo!

The brand new Doctor Who logo for Series 5 has been revealed...

Steven Moffat, the new Head Writer and Executive Producer (and the genius behind 'The Empty Child', 'The Girl in the Fireplace', 'Blink' and 'Silence in the Library'), says, "A new logo. The 11th logo for the 11th Doctor – those grand old words, Doctor Who, suddenly looking newer than ever. And, look at that, something really new – an insignia! DW in TARDIS form! Simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle. I apologise to school notebooks everywhere, because in 2010 that's what they're going to be wearing."

I myself think the TARDIS-shaped "DW" insignia of the logo is really very good, but for me the actual words part, "Doctor Who", is a bit of a disappointment. Although I really hope I take to it soon. I don't enjoy disliking parts of Doctor Who.

EDIT: The updated version of the logo they're actually going for is this...

There have been 9 official Doctor Who logos up to the current one, the most famous of the classic series being the diamond logo which lasted many, many years and bridged the change from Jon Pertwee's to Tom Baker's Doctors; it made its debut appearance in the opening of Sarah Jane Smith's first story 'The Time Warrior'.
