Torchwood Series 4 Confirmed!

A brand new fourth series of Torchwood, containing a total of 10 episodes, has been confirmed in an announcement by the BBC, and will be produced by BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide, and the American network Starz Entertainment.

The next series has been confirmed to, once again, feature John Barrowman as everyone's favourite 'omni-sexual' time agent Captain Jack Harkness, and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper, though there have been no official confirmation of other returning characters. However, Rhys is almost definitely going to return, on the grounds that he is Gwen's husband and father of her child; Russell T Davies has also described in the past how Rhys helps keep Gwen's feet - along with the show itself - firmly in the real world.

The new series will also feature brand new characters for the Torchwood team and a whole host of adventures all across the globe!

Here's what the makers have to say...

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning:
"We have a long history of working with many U.S. networks but it is incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the first time, as well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell, Jane and Julie. Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder than ever."

Jane Tranter, EVP, BBC Worldwide Productions:
"Torchwood has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and U.S., and in this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive instalment yet."

Chris Albrecht, LLC, President and CEO of Starz:
"We're committed to programming exceptional television that is entertaining, imaginative and provides a premium TV experience, and by any measure the new concept for Torchwood fits that mandate. I've been part of successful partnerships with Jane Tranter and the BBC previously, and I'm very much looking forward to working with them again."
In The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Albrecht said this:
"It was too good an opportunity to pass up. Each season of the show, the show has evolved and "The Children of Earth" was terrific as evident in it was just named a Television Critics Press Awards nominee. I'm interested in doing sci-fi and what I like a lot about "Torchwood" is it's a very classic sci-fi entry. It's all about the story, it's not about big effects. I thought "Children of Earth" evolved the franchise to a place where it could continue to evolve on pay TV with an American partner that could bring more production resources."
"At the end of 'Children of Earth' Torchwood was destroyed, so when we pick up in our world the need for Torchwood arises again. A lot of this story takes place in the U.S. as well with several characters that are in the U.S. intelligence forces and end up teaming up with Gwen and Captain Jack to deal with the situation at hand."

The Hollywood Reporter also spoke to Russell T Davies:
"It's very much the next step. It's not a new version, it's not a reboot. We're simply moving countries. The show was previously a format show - monster of the week. The breakthrough was "Children of Earth" and that it became one long story. It's not going to be 'Lost' and take 20 years to find out what's going on. It's going to have a most remarkable conclusion after 10 episodes."
"We're simply going to tell a good story. I wrote the pilot 7 months ago irregardless of network. BBC1 is a prime-time channel, but a brave channel. I don't worry about content."

Series 4 is rumoured to begin broadcasting during Summer of 2011, though again no confirmation of this or production dates have been made.

So there you have it! Torchwood LIVES! Sorry, Ianto fans.

  4. I'm female and 71 yrs old. "Torchwood" is one of my favourite shows, I watch it in Cairns Australia. Hope they continue on with the series as it's hard to get good sci-fi. Also I watched "Flash Forward" and was sorry to see it end so abruptly, I have read the book. I am hoping it is kept going.
Is "Torchwood" from a book too?

  5. Great news that Series 4 has been commissioned. Also that Gwen Cooper is still with us (I hope the baby doesn't get in the way!).
As for new characters - Lois Habibah was the best new character from the fabulous 'Children of Earth' series 3 (which was consistently better than either Torchwood series 1 or 2 or any of the recent Doctor Who series). Rumours suggest returns for Martha, Mickey and Alonso - any or all of which would be welcome. Please don't produce three completely brand new characters.

  6. YES!!!!!!!
I am so glad that there will be another series of Torchwood! I really hope that we will see the return of Captain John Hart and maybe even see 'The Doctor' in one of the episodes and I wonder who the new Torchwood team will be? I can not wait!!! I'm sure that Captain John Hart will have his own series later on, that will be cool.

I thought it would be the end for that amazing doctor who spin off.
I think that Martha should be featured in Season 4 of Torchwood and maybe Alonso. That guy that that was on Doctor Who that Captain Jack was planning to chat up. Can't WAIT!!!!!!!!

  9. I loved Ianto, his wise cracks and his perky attitude and was verry upset when he died. I cried buckets :) he was the first character I warmed up to and he will remain my favourite through time even as the show goes on. Can't wait for the new series and god bless Ianto's soul. 11. To Patricia, Torchwood isn't unfourtunately based on a book but there are little book series that have come out of the t.v show. I think it's great that your 71 and still watching great t.v like Torchwood! (p.s I'm from Australia too! Just a little more southern in Victoria!)

Would very much like the return of Lois and especially Ianto, his way of dying was just so sad... :'( Cannot wait for new series although I think a new chracter wouldn't be too bad because it would give Gwen a chance to show him/her around like she was shown... (again :'()

  17. I am glad Torchwwod will be coming back on tv as i love the series and was sad to see it end. I have seen John Barrowman on stage and know he is the best but i am dissapointed that one of the new charters Oswald Jones, a dangerous convicted murderer and pedophile who turns a prison release into celebrity status. I think torchwood would be a bit more better

However I really miss Ianto, Toshiko and Owen!
Hopefully Martha, Mickey and Alonso will join but alonso doesn't replace ianto.
I would also like to see someone like Captain John Hart or Bilis Manger to come back...

  21. Gah, there was me thinking it was on air over chrismas. They've not even filmed it yet!

I would hate to see lots of characters from doctor who or sja appear in torchwood, i think it needs to distance itself from the other shows in order to be appealing.

  22. I love Torchwood and Dr Who, what they should do is have a couple of episode's with the Doctor in to save the world again and bring all the cast of Torchwood and Dr Who back once again for one last time along with their worst enemies the Darleks a,nd 456 out of Children of the Earth! That would be awesome!

  23. I watched the whole torchwood 1,2&3 over 3 day of which i didnt get much sleep lol , but i loved it 100% jacks a babe and i love how his character grows. There were many times throughout were i had a good wee cry :D it's the best take on si-fi drama i've ever seen , dont get me wrong i like dr.who but this seems more the way people would react to all the different stuff that happens to them. the main thing i will miss is jack and Ianto's relationship to eachother for so many reasons. there are soooo many ways they could bring Ianto back ,but i can see why they might want a new interest, i really hope they bring them back together. XD i really really hope theres much of torchwood like 3 or 4 more seasons lol wishful thinking but its nice to dream and oh i hope they dont kill jack off in the last ep because i would be crying for weeks :D xxx

  24. agreed... ianto back would be good... it would be mighty amusing for him to come back and find jack with someone else though... cause friction and such :') although jack and ianto were pretty hot together :D

  25. dear simonkh2, I don't think they can kill of jack since he ends up dying in 5 billion years time as The Face of Boe xx I absolutley LOVE Torchwood though and miss Ianto, Toshiko and Owen soooooooooo much!!! Btw did anyone else notice in miracle day episode 1 i think it is that when jack goes in to see the guy thats been in the explosion tht he uses owens name as a fake identity?

Do you want Christopher Eccleston back for the 50th Anniversary?

Not sure - I'm not bothered either way, to be honest...
